"Many of us think we can pay off our sleep debt on weekends and be more productive on weekdays," said lead author Sumi Lee, assistant professor at the University of South Florida's School of Aging Studies.

"However, the results of this study show that lack of sleep for only one night can significantly weaken your daily performance," Lee said in a university press release.

Researchers assessed the effects of poor sleep for less than six hours a night, which experts say is the minimum that ordinary adults need to get perfect health.

The study included nearly 2,000 relatively healthy, well-educated middle-aged American adults. They recorded their mental and physical health in a diary for eight consecutive days.

About four in ten (42%) experienced at least one night of sleep loss, sleeping 1.5 hours less than the usual amount.

Resulting from lack of sleep

Lack of sleep resulted in negative feelings such as anger, nervousness, loneliness and frustration. Physical symptoms also appeared, including upper respiratory problems, aches and digestive problems.

These mental and physical problems remained high until participants got more than six hours of sleep, according to the study.

Lee said the biggest increase in symptoms occurred after just one night of poor sleep and steadily worsened until day three.

After this point, the body is relatively accustomed to repeated sleep loss, Lee said. However, on the sixth day, sleep-deprived participants reported that the severity of their physical symptoms was at their worst.

Previous research by Lee found that losing only 16 minutes of sleep can harm functional performance. The researcher also showed that a slight lack of sleep can reduce daily mindfulness, which is critical to managing stress and maintaining healthy routines.

About a third of US adults sleep less than six hours a night. If this becomes a habit, it is increasingly difficult for your body to fully recover from poor sleep, according to the researcher.

This study was completed and its results appeared on July 5 in Behavioral Medicine.
